The Short Answer
If you only want reminders, you can replace FollowUp.cc with Gmail's own nudges and snooze (free) or Boomerang (free plan, paid from $4.98 a month billed yearly). If you want sales sequences and tracking, Mixmax. If the part you dread is writing the third follow-up to a client who has not paid, autoremind.ai writes and sends the follow-ups for you, free for three reminders and $4 a month for ten. Prices were checked on each vendor's site on 1 October 2026.
What FollowUp.cc Does and Costs
FollowUp.cc is a Gmail extension for reminders and follow-ups. You set a reminder on a thread and it comes back when you asked. Reminders are unlimited, can recur, and non-Gmail users can set them by putting a FollowUp.cc address in the TO or BCC field. On the Professional plan, it can also send a follow-up you have written, and cancel it if the person replies first.

The thing FollowUp.cc does not do is write the message. Whether it reminds you or sends on schedule, the words are yours, and so is the decision about how firm the third chase should sound.
The Alternatives
Gmail's Own Nudges and Snooze (Free)
Before paying for anything, check what Gmail already does. Nudges (in Settings, General) bring back sent emails that have not had a reply after a few days. Snooze hides a thread until a time you choose. Schedule send writes now and sends later. For a freelancer with two or three open invoices, that may be enough.
What you do not get: a set date for the reminder on sent mail, tracking or anything sent for you.
Boomerang for Gmail
Price as of 1 October 2026: Basic free with 10 message credits a month; Personal $4.98, Pro $14.98 and Premium $49.98 a month, billed annually. Source: boomeranggmail.com/subscriptions.
Boomerang covers send later, reminders that bring a thread back if nobody replies, read receipts and Inbox Pause, with versions for Outlook, iOS and Android. Its Respondable assistant scores the email you are writing. It is cheaper than FollowUp.cc at the entry level and the closest like-for-like swap. You still write the follow-up. Mixmax
Price as of 1 October 2026: free plan (20 tracked emails, sequences for 50 contacts a month); Inbox Copilot $29 per user a month billed yearly or $34 monthly. Source: mixmax.com/pricing.
Mixmax is a sales email workspace for Gmail and Outlook with sequences, templates, tracking and meeting booking. It is more than most freelancers need, but the free plan is worth a look if you send small sequences.
autoremind.ai
Price: three live reminders free with no card and no expiry; Starter $4 a month for ten.
autoremind.ai is the one on this list that writes the follow-up. You describe the chase in one sentence, for example "Chase Dana at Northwind about invoice 2207, $1,800, due last Friday." It writes the follow-ups, sends them from your own Gmail in the original thread, and makes each one firmer than the last: professional, then firm, then urgent. Each reminder sends at most four messages, and it stops as soon as Dana replies.
It spots the reply without reading your inbox: each follow-up carries a tracked address in the reply path. Slack is supported for chasing a collaborator or teammate.

Who Should Switch and Who Shouldn't
Stay with FollowUp.cc if you rely on reminders for yourself, use the tracking, or set reminders from a non-Gmail client.
Switch to Gmail's built-in tools or Boomerang if you only use reminders and want to pay less or nothing.
